This project is sponsored by Waymo aiming to design a new visual identity for the autonomous Waymo Driver in 2025. Collaborating with experts from different areas, the key challenge of this project is the integration of physical form design, interaction design and brand image into one set of sensor suite that is applicable to any vehicle form factors.

Collabrated with Akshay, Stephan, Kyle, Darren
an autonomous driver (sensor suite) that could drive any type of vehicle anywhere.
To design one consistent visual identity for the driver, the sensor suite,
that's applicable across different form factors.
Our goal is
Each form factor needs a different design for the sensor suite.
The sensor layout needs to guarantee the best vision coverage
Interactions, mainly on the app, are detached from the Waymo driver.
The design of the driver should align with the Waymo branding language.
And more ...
Challenging the existing design
that packs multiple sensors into an integrated body
Our solution is:
A modular, adaptable sensor suite cross over more than three form factors.
Camera + Lidar
Side LED Strip
Adaptors & Assembly
Flexible Sensor Layout
Assemble in Adaptor
Camera + Lidar
One Design Fits on all Form Factors
Interaction with Driver
Information Hierarchy embodied on the vehicle
1st Read Information
(10 feet away)
The underlit light indicates the working status (on/off) of all sensors.
2nd Read Information
(2-10 feet away)
Close range interaction indicating the status (waiting, greeting, leaving ...) of the driver.
3rd Read Information
(within 2 feet)
Intimate interactions with the driver include sensitive information. (user profile, passcode ...)
